Where is my trading journal stored?
In the browser you use it in, on your device, using the browser’s built-in database (IndexedDB). Unless you sign in, there’s no server copy, so your trades, notes and screenshots exist only in that browser.
If you sign in with Google, this browser keeps its copy and our server keeps one too, without the screenshot pictures. The privacy policy says exactly what’s stored and how to delete it.
Each browser keeps its own copy. Chrome and Safari on the same laptop are two separate journals, and so are two Chrome profiles. Your phone’s browser can’t see what you logged on your computer.
Your stats are worked out from your trades, in your browser, each time you look. Nothing is calculated or stored anywhere else.
Is anything uploaded or sent anywhere?
Not unless you sign in: signed out, nothing you put in the journal is sent anywhere. The calculators and the rest of this site are served with a security rule (a Content-Security-Policy of connect-src ‘none’) that tells your browser to block them from sending data to any server, ours included.
There are no analytics or tracking scripts. Like any website, the host that delivers the pages sees that your browser asked for them. It never receives what you type into the calculators, or into the journal while you’re signed out.
Signed in, the journal sends your changes to our server so your other signed-in browsers get them. Screenshot pictures aren’t sent; they stay in this browser.
What can delete my journal?
Anything that clears this site’s data in your browser deletes the journal with it. Unless you’re signed in, there’s no server copy, so a backup file is the only way to get it back.
These all clear it:
- Clearing browsing dataClearing “cookies and site data”, for this site or for all sites, deletes the journal.
- Safari after seven daysSafari can delete a site’s data after seven days in which you’ve used Safari but not opened that site.
- Private windowsClosing a private or incognito window you used the journal in deletes it.
- Low storageBrowsers can delete stored site data when the device is low on space, unless this browser has given the journal persistent storage.
- Removing the browserUninstalling or resetting the browser, or resetting the device, deletes it too.
The journal isn’t an app you install, so a backup file is the only copy that’s safe from this.
Export a backup regularly and keep the file somewhere other than this browser: another device, a USB drive or your own cloud storage. The journal reminds you when one is due.
If you’re signed in, signing in again brings your journal back from our server, apart from screenshot pictures and any changes that hadn’t reached the server yet. Keep exporting backups for those.
Does the journal ask the browser to keep my data?
Yes, once you’ve saved your first trade or imported a backup, the journal asks this browser for persistent storage. If the browser grants it, it won’t clear your journal to make room when the device is low on space.
Persistent storage doesn’t replace a backup file. Clearing your browsing data still deletes the journal, and so does closing a private window you used the journal in.
Each browser decides whether to grant persistent storage, often by how much you use a site. Firefox shows its own prompt; other browsers usually answer without asking you.
Data in the journal shows whether it’s granted. If it isn’t, the journal asks again after a later save or import, at most once a week, and you can choose Ask again there.
How do I back up my journal?
Open Data in the journal and choose Export backup. It downloads one file, named like tradijourney-backup-2026-10-03-1432.json, with your accounts, trades, deposits and withdrawals, tags, notes, journal entries and screenshots.
Keep that file somewhere other than this browser. The journal shows when you last exported, so you can see how old your newest backup is.
It also reminds you. When 20 trades have changed since your last backup, or 7 days have passed and your journal has changed, a reminder with an Export backup button appears at the top of the journal’s main screens. Not now hides it for 3 days or until 20 more trades change; it doesn’t turn off. The reminder appears only in the journal: nothing is emailed or sent.
The file isn’t encrypted. Anyone who has it can read your trades, so store it the way you’d store a bank statement.
How do I move my journal to another device or browser?
Export a backup file on the first device, then open the journal on the second one and import that file under Data. It merges with whatever is already there, so nothing on the second device is wiped.
Your data lives on this device. Move it between devices with a backup file. Signed out, changes don’t follow you on their own: anything you log after the export stays where you logged it until you export and import again.
Or sign in with Google in both browsers. Your journal then stays the same in both, apart from screenshot pictures, which stay in the browser you added them in.
- Only in the file:Added.
- In both:The version edited most recently is kept. If that version was deleted, it is deleted on this device too.
- Only on this device:Left as it is.
Accounts, deposits, withdrawals, tags, notes, journal entries and screenshots merge the same way as trades.
How much can I store?
Usually far more than a journal needs, because browsers commonly let a site use several gigabytes. Trades and notes are tiny; screenshots take most of the space, so they are shrunk before they are stored.
Data in the journal shows how much of this browser’s storage is in use, how much of it your screenshots take, and whether persistent storage is granted. When usage reaches 80% of what the browser allows, a storage warning appears at the top of the journal’s main screens, with a button to free up space or export a backup. Not now hides it for a day, or until usage reaches 95%.
Some browsers don’t report these figures. Then the journal can’t warn you, so keep exporting backups.
If the browser’s storage does fill up, the journal keeps the trade and tells you the screenshot wasn’t saved. A full browser never costs you a trade.
How do I free up space?
Open Data in the journal and choose Free up space under Screenshots. The journal saves your screenshots to a file, then removes their full pictures from this browser, and your trades, captions and previews stay.
You choose which screenshots: those on trades older than 3 months, older than 1 year, or all of them, and, if several accounts have screenshots, one account or all. Nothing is removed until you confirm the file is saved where you can find it.
Screenshots you’ve already deleted are cleared in the same run. They aren’t saved to the file.
To put the full pictures back, import that screenshot file under Data. Keep it somewhere other than this browser: your backups carry the previews, not the full pictures you removed.
Does Tradijourney work offline? Can I install it?
No. Tradijourney isn’t an installable app, and it needs an internet connection to open.
Your trades are still stored on your device, not online. The connection is only needed to load the journal’s pages.
Who can see my trades?
Anyone who can use this browser on this device can open the journal, because there’s no password. Signed out, nobody else can, because your trades aren’t stored anywhere else.
Signed in, our server holds a copy of your journal too. The privacy policy says who can read it.
On a shared computer, use your own browser profile or your own device account. Browser extensions that are allowed to read every site can read this one too, as with any page.
